Sauvignon Blanc makes grassy, gooseberry, smoky wines in the Loire, while in New Zealand it has been described by some as "alive with flavours of cut grass and fresh fruits" and others as "cat's pee on a gooseberry bush" but not necessarily as a criticism, while Semillon produces wines that are full flavoured rich and aromatic they often are blended together to take advantage of the strenghts of each variety.
Riesling wines are delicate but complex and are characterized by a spicy, fruity flavour with a flower-scented bouqet for the young ones to a full flavoured, rich with petroly aromas to the mature ones. Riesling is vinified in a variety of styles ranging from dry to very sweet.
Italian white wines have a character all of their own. Crisp, soft, and usually highly acidic, they are made to accompany food, not overpower it. Italy's best white wines are grown, primarily, in the three regions called collectively, Triveneto (literally, three Venices) Veneto, Trentino Alto-Adige and Fruili-Venezia Guilia, as well as in Piedmont.
Think of Spanish Wines and your first thought will probably be of an oaky, red Rioja. But until recently if you asked a non-Spaniard to name a Spanish white wine region, you’d be hard pressed. However, huge investment, a growing economy, increased confidence and a new generation of young winemakers have brought massive changes to the Spanish white wine industry as a whole.
White Rhone wines are usually blends. The principle grapes are Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc. Other white grapes may be included in miniscule amounts, but these four are the principles. Viognier is typically alone in the North and absent in the Southern Rhone, Marsanne and Roussanne are two peas in pod - usually found together both in and outside of the Rhone region.
